Walking on the site, one is not aware of the grounds, nor even the river. The only natural element, the river, has itself been entirely wrapped in concrete. The river's walls relate the buildings to the ground in a way that defines the site's artificial nature, and yet they allude to a second nature. The project is an attempt to reinterpret the concealed natural character of the site via new mediating elements that tie the buildings literally to the hidden land. A series of parallel walls trace the original, natural contours of the site forming an overlay topography that intersects the artificial terrain of the buildings' structural grid. By modifying the former sense of inside and outside as such, a new distribution and circulation system is generated, linking the new functions of the museum to the morphological undercurrents of the place.

Nell'area non è più possibile riconoscere la natura originaria del suolo. Anche il fiume che la attraversa è stato incanalato in un alveo artificiale. Gli edifici abbandonati possono essere considerati come una natura secondaria che nel tempo ha sostituito completamente quella originaria. Il progetto rappresenta il tentativo di reintrodurre la natura originale senza escludere le trasformazioni avvenute nel tempo. A tal fine viene introdotto un elemento di mediazione fra edifici e suolo, costituito da una serie di muri che formano il sistema di distribuzione che conterrà i percorsi principali del museo. Attraverso un processo che prende come punto di partenza le curve di livello del terreno, viene generata una nuova topografia che si sovrappone a quella artificiale costituita dalla maglia strutturale degli edifici.
