Monteroni D’Arbia is located 15 km from Siena on the via Cassia, within the hilly area of the “Crete Senesi”.

The project is an addition to a building partially realised during the 60th only up to the floor of the foreseen church. The urban context is characterised by the contrast of historical and natural elements and the recent urban fabric including a new square. The program of the new complex is organised around the Churchyard. Since the difference in level between the public square and the Churchyard did not allow a spatial continuity and in order to minimise the perception of this gap, a curvilinear access ramp has been built. The materials, chosen to be integrated with the context, are the laminated wood for the church roof and the concrete split blocks for the external walls.

Il progetto prevede il completamento di un centro parrocchiale iniziato negli anni ’60. All’epoca era stato realizzato solo il campanile e un volume a pianta rettangolare parzialmente interrato che avrebbe dovuto contenere la cripta e costituire il basamento dell’intero complesso. La copertura del volume, che costituisce la base di riferimento per il progetto di completamento, si trova a 4 metri di quota rispetto alla piazza antistante. Per ridurre al minimo la percezione del distacco di 4 metri tra la piazza e il nuovo sagrato, viene inserita una rampa di accesso che definisce il margine ovest della piazza. La composizione dei volumi si basa sul rapporto dialettico tra gli elementi storico-naturalistici e contemporanei che costituiscono la struttura urbana della città e individua il sagrato quale fulcro intorno al quale si organizzano tutte le funzioni.
